Webinar: Renewable electricity and group buying: What is the value and reality for Queensland local governments?

Queensland councils’ interest in switching to renewable electricity is rising.

Local governments across Australia are under pressure to address community resilience and identify funding mechanisms for climate adaptation.

Join us for this webinar featuring experienced regional organisations of councils (ROCs) and council energy buyers’ who will share learnings from their renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs):

Nearly 100% of VIC councils and 75% of NSW councils have now entered into renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs), either alone or via group buying, to reduce their electricity costs and emissions.

We will provide insights into key questions:

  • What are the benefits and risks of moving away from their current electricity retailer to contract renewables in Queensland?
  • How to weigh up the value of going renewable versus BAU electricity purchasing with the CSO subsidy?
  • Could group buying help Queensland councils, especially for smaller councils with limited resources?

Across Australia, ROCs have successfully led hundreds of councils in group buying of renewable electricity via PPAs to deliver greater price certainty and decarbonised electricity. Examples include the SSROC (25 councils), Central NSW Joint Organisation (JO) (16 councils), Hunter JO & Mid-North Coast JO (13 councils) and more in NSW, VECO (50+ councils) in Victoria and WALGA (50+ councils) in WA.
